Maryborough Golf have maintained top spot courtesy of a 66-55 victory over Highland Gold in a contest that was closer than the 15 points the ladder leaders gained suggested.

It was Graeme Orr’s 22-16 win over Jeanette Oliver and Kort Gay’s 26-21 win over Roy Crawley which made the majority of the difference, with the rink between Liz Bucknall and Paul Gothard unable to be separated at 18 shots apiece.

Dunolly Blue are just one point behind on the ladder, taking a second-straight win with a 69-53 win over Carisbrook.

Carisbrook, however, will be thrilled by how competitive they were able to be on the day, taking a rink thanks to Ross Gregory’s 26-21 win over Terry Long.

But Tony Galofaro’s 25-14 win over Phillip Burt and Alan Weir’s 23-13 win over Judy Cassidy kept Carisbrook at bay for Dunolly Blue.

The closest game of the round came to a head at Talbot, with Talbot and Dunolly Gold playing the first draw of the season.

Ray Prentice gave Talbot the start with a 20-15 win over Fabio Delconte, but Jim Haigh hit back with a 26-21 win over Barb Crossley. With scores level, Chris Crossley and Wayne Stephens couldn’t be separated on 17 shots apiece.

After they were swept in round one, Highland Tartan returned home and brutally swept aside Avoca with a 111-26 victory.

Greg Shay delivered a 45-7 win over Noel Parratt, while Michael Fryar had the closest game of the day, a 23-15 win over Ian Proctor. Garry Coburn finished off the job with a 43-4 win over Loralee Field.

There are many intriguing games as round three begins on Tuesday.

Chief among them will be the meeting between Maryborough Golf and Highland Tartan. Golf will be desperate to land a standout result, but Tartan will be keen to show again why they are the reigning premiers.

Another intriguing matchup sees third-placed Talbot take on fifth-placed Carisbrook. Carisbrook will have plenty of confidence from their start to the season, and will be hoping for a scalp, while Talbot require a win to keep up with the top two.

Dunolly Blue will be hoping to take advantage of the winner of the Golf and Tartan clash when they host Highland Gold.

Avoca will be desperate to get their season going when they travel to sixth-placed Dunolly Gold to round out the round three slate.
