Midweek leaders clear away in close round of action
It was a productive Tuesday for the top two teams in the competition, moving clear of the chasing pack after key wins.
Dunolly Blue maintain top spot after taking a critical 57-43 win over third-placed Maryborough Golf.
The ladder-leaders did not have it all their own way, however, with Graeme Orr taking a 19-10 win over Terry Long to get Golf on the board. Tony Galofaro gave Dunolly Blue two points with a 20-16 win over Kort Gay, but Alan Weir’s 27-8 win over Liz Bucknall proved to be the crucial rink of the match.
A dominant 97-36 win over Carisbrook means that Highland Tartan stay just seven points behind Dunolly Blue in second, while extending their advantage over Maryborough Golf to 17 points.
Tartan took all three rinks, with Garry Coburn scoring a 30-10 win over Phillip Burt, while Greg Shay took a 28-17 win over Judy Cassidy. A dominant 39-9 win by Michael Fryar over Laurence Cassidy ensured it would be Tartan’s day.
The race for fourth has heated up, with Avoca getting themselves back into the fight with a 64-62 win over Talbot.
All three rinks were exceptionally close, and in fact, it was Talbot who took two of the rinks, with Ray Prentice winning 21-19 over Daniel Giddings and Chris Crossley’s 17-16 win over Ian Proctor leaving Talbot with four points.
But Noel Parratt’s 29-24 win over Barb Crossley was crucial, ensuring Avoca would get over the line to reduce the margin to just 10 points between the two teams, who sit fourth and sixth respectively.
Highland Gold now sit just two points off the top four after sweeping Dunolly Gold with a 78-50 win.
Roy Crawley scored a 20-15 win over Fabio Delconte, and the other two rinks were just as comfortable, with Jeanette Oliver winning 23-15 over Jim Haigh, and Paul Gothard scoring a 35-20 win over Wayne Stephens.
Round six looms as another crucial round, with plenty of crunch games.
Top of the agenda is the meeting between ladder-leaders Dunolly Blue and fourth-placed Talbot at Talbot. Dunolly Blue will be hoping to continue their good form, while Talbot will be out to protect their home rink and keep their spot in the top four intact.
If Talbot lose, however, the opportunity presents itself for one of Avoca or Highland Gold, with Highland Gold sitting two points behind in fifth, and Avoca 10 points behind in sixth, with the two teams meeting at Avoca.
Highland Tartan will be determined to keep the pressure on for top spot when they host Dunolly Gold, while Maryborough Golf will be keen to take a stranglehold on a top three spot when they travel to Carisbrook.
