Just the matter of who finishes second is all that’s left to decide the home-and-away portion of the midweek pennant, with a thrilling final-round blockbuster central to that equation.

Talbot certainly did their chances of the double chance no harm, but more importantly, inflicted Highland Tartan’s first loss of the season after a 57-51 success at home.

There were three different results across all the rinks, but it was Ray Prentice’s 26-17 win over Andrew Brumby which provided all the difference, despite Greg Shay’s 19-16 win over Barb Crossley. Matthew Vernon and Leanne Wallis could not be split, finishing on 15 shots apiece.

Avoca sealed their spot in the finals by sweeping Newstead with a 66-46 victory.

The win means they now sit an unassailable 26 points clear of Maryborough Golf, and are locked into fourth.

Noel Parratt defeated Brian Daly 20-17, while Daniel Giddings likewise took a strong 23-16 win over Graeme Lipback. Loralee Field finished off the job with a 23-13 win over Philip McNabb.

Maryborough Golf may not have made the finals, but they had something to smile about with a 59-53 win over Dunolly Gold.

To their credit, Dunolly Gold pushed Golf all the way, despite the discrepancy in ladder positions, with all three rinks decided by five shots or less.

Kort Gay defeated Wayne Stephens 19-18, while Marian Webb defeated Frank Mifsud 21-16. Golf were just one shot off a clean sweep, with Liz Bucknall and Fabio Delconte tied on 19 apiece.

Carisbrook’s bid to avoid the wooden spoon fell just two points short after a wild turn of events saw them lose 58-57 to Highland Gold.

Tony Lacey gave Highland Gold a good footing in the game thanks to a 34-6 win over Helen Slater, but Carisbrook were able to gain all that ground back thanks to Patricia Stancombe’s 31-8 win over Corry Moss. They were able to gain more ground thanks to Judy Cassidy’s 20-16 win over Dennis Prosser, but fell short by the barest of margins, meaning they had to ultimately settle for the wooden spoon.

Round 18’s key battle sees Dunolly Blue and Talbot meet, with the winner set to take the double chance.

Talbot comes into this matchup in great form, with their afore-mentioned win over Highland Tartan, while they also fell just three shots short in their last meeting.

Highland Tartan will look to bounce back from their first loss of the season when they host Dunolly Gold in a game they’ll look to use to tune up for the finals.

Avoca’s win on Tuesday means they can now relax against Maryborough Golf instead of facing a cut-throat encounter for the final spot in the top four.

With both Highland Gold and Newstead locked into sixth and seventh respectively, the two clash with little to play for, but will be looking to finish off their season on a positive note.

Carisbrook’s season is over, as they’ll have the bye.
