Midweek bowls returned on Tuesday after round two was cancelled due to heavy rain, with the top three teams already clearing away.
Highland Tartan have shot to the top of the ladder after defeating Carisbrook by 58 shots, winning 89-31.
It was a convincing performance from last season’s runner-up, with Greg Shay winning the first rink with authority, taking a 32-7 win over Phillip Burt. A tighter affair was had on rink two, with Leanne Wallis defeating Eric Symons 22-15, before Andrew Brumby finished off the job strongly, defeating Leonie Briggs 35-9.
Following close behind is Maryborough Golf, who disposed of impressive round one winners Newstead by 26 shots, recording a 70-44 win.
A tight first rink went the way of Marian Webb, who defeated Brian Daly 19-17, and Golf were home after a big win on the second rink, with Elizabeth Bucknall winning 31-9 over Rod Jackson. Golf ensured that they would take a clean sweep when Michelle Harris defeated Mark Leckey 20-18 to keep in touch with Highland Tartan, with the two teams separated by percentage.
Dunolly Blue are just two points behind on the ladder, but were made to fight all the way by Highland Gold, with the second rink proving the biggest difference in their 52-45 victory.
Corry Moss got Highland Gold off to a great start, with a 22-16 victory against Gregory Dobbin as Highland Gold looked to take the game right up to the reigning premiers. However, Alan Weir’s 24-12 win over Jeanette Oliver turned the tide of the game, and Dunolly Blue made sure they were able to take 14 points home thanks to Tony Galofaro’s 12-11 win over Adrian Masterman-Smith.
Talbot got on the board for season 2023/24, and moved inside the top four courtesy of a tight 60-57 victory over Avoca.
Robert Jackson helped get Talbot on the right track on rink one, taking a 22-18 victory over Daniel Giddings, but Avoca were able to hit back on rink two, with Ann Loosmore taking a 21-15 win over Ray Prentice. With the game on the line, Barb Crossley was able to get Talbot home, defeating Loralee Field 23-18 to ensure they would get on the board.
Round four could see a significant divide between the top four and bottom four.
Highland Tartan will travel to Newstead, who will be looking to bounce back at home after their loss to Golf.
Carisbrook will play their long-awaited first game at home, having been denied the chance to celebrate their first game in round two, and will be hoping that it helps them get over the line against Dunolly Blue after two big losses to start the season.
After coming close on Tuesday, Highland Gold will be hoping for a good result against Talbot as they look to climb into top four contention.
Finally, Avoca will be looking for a good result after two extremely competitive outings to start their season, albeit having suffered two losses to Highland Tartan and Talbot respectively, when they host Dunolly Gold.
Maryborough Golf will have the bye.
