The Maryborough Croquet Club successfully hosted a fun day for Melbourne Grammar School students last Sunday afternoon following their orchestra performance at the Maryborough Railway Station.

Despite wet conditions playing their part, the afternoon saw the entire orchestra let their hair down, with two rounds played between multiple teams.

Maryborough Croquet Club treasurer Graeme Jones was thrilled that the Melbourne Grammar School chose the club to relax following their performance.

“We were very pleased to have the Melbourne Grammar School come along last week,” he said.

“Pat Miller, who was the conductor of the orchestra, went to find out what the boys could do afterwards, so he went to the station, as that was where they were going to perform. When he came out of the station, he saw our club, and thought ‘wow, what a great place’. So, he contacted us, and asked if the boys could play croquet, and we were happy to accommodate them. We negotiated backwards and forwards and that’s how we ended up.”

Jones said schools that go to the croquet club normally get a different perspective on the enjoyable aspect of the sport after playing it, and that the reaction of the Melbourne Grammar School students was no exception.

“Normally, we have a lot of school groups, and when they come, they wonder why they are doing this, but when they go, they are quite different. They’re always happy and quite pleased to have done what they have done,” he said.

“Having schools like theirs coming in does help our reputation. We also work with Wesley College as well, from their Clunes campus. The kids come up for a term at a time.”

Jones has one simple message for anyone who would like a change of pace by participating in croquet, urging people to give it a try.

“Come and give it a go. We’re there on Wednesday mornings and Saturday mornings from 9 or 9.15 am, and we’d love to see anybody that would love to give it a go,” he said.

“It’s not for everybody, we get that, but it’d be great for them to work it out by trying it out.”
