A medical episode was at fault for a crash which saw a car hit the Napier Street wall of the local IGA last weekend, police say.

The incident occurred at around 11 am on Saturday, just down from the notorious Napier and Nolan streets intersection.

Maryborough Police Sergeant Paul Martin said the incident, which saw the offending vehicle clip another car before hitting the wall of the Maryborough IGA, was due to a medical episode suffered by the driver.

“We were called in relation to a car which had struck the Napier Street wall of the IGA,” he said.

“The 72-year-old driver had exited the Metro petrol station and in the process suffered a medical episode and lost control of the car. The car was launched out of control onto Napier Street and clipped the back of a vehicle travelling north, before continuing forward and crashing into the wall of the IGA.

“Police, ambulance and CFA attended, and the driver was safely removed from the car.”

Sgt Martin said the 72-year-old man was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment, and that only minor damage was done to the car travelling along Napier Street with no injuries to its occupants.

“It was confirmed to be a medical event, it wasn’t a Napier and Nolan intersection collision,” he said.

“It was very fortunate there were no pedestrians travelling along Napier Street at the time, and that there was only minor damage done to the second vehicle.”
