MDHS to host celebration
Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS) is inviting the community to join a celebration day at the new Maryborough Hospital this weekend.
Since it’s opening in April, the $115 million hospital has been transforming healthcare in the region. It has a 32 bed inpatient unit, two birthing suites, operating theatres, a medical day unit, new consultant suites, a welcoming cafe, reception and more parking.
The hospital also features artworks and design elements created with Djaara Traditional Owners.
These features celebrate local heritage and help make the hospital a culturally safe space for patients, families, visitors and staff.
MDHS CEO Nickola Allan said the hospital has delivered world class care closer to home.
“This is a once-in-a-generation transformation for our region. The hospital is more than bricks and mortar,” she said.
“The artworks are culturally developed with local Traditional Owners and First Nations artists, highlighting the importance of connection and respect for local heritage.
“The feedback received from patients and community has been wonderful. Now we also want to start the conversation about what our community still needs in the future for health services.”
Member for Ripon Martha Haylett spoke in Victorian parliament last week on statistics, outlining the care provided to the community since the hospital’s opening, provided to her by Ms Allan.
“The redeveloped Maryborough Hospital has blown the community away. There is a real sense of pride in having such a state of the art facility in our local community,” she said.
“3065 people have presented to urgent care and 435 to the inpatient unit, seven babies born, 167 appointments with midwives, 255 visits to the sexual and reproductive clinic, 570 dialysis treatments, 487 patients through the new operating theatres and 92 treatments via the oncology centre.”
Ms Allan said she is excited to celebrate the milestone with the community.
“This is a celebration of community, collaboration, culture and healthcare. Come along to take a look inside and see how MDHS is connecting with the community region to great healthcare,” she said.
The final phase of works to reveal the 1860s hospital facade, improve access to the main entrance and provide more accessible parking are still underway.
They are expected to be complete by the end of 2025.
The $115 million Maryborough Hospital Redevelopment was funded by the Victorian Government.
The community opening will include:
A Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony at 10 am.
Free sausage sizzle, cooked by volunteers at the Carisbrook Lions Club.
Guided hospital tours every 30 minutes from 11 am.
Displays and a colouring-in corner for kids.
The event will be located at the main entrance on the ground floor, Maryborough Hospital 75-87 Clarendon Street.
For accessible entry, the Neill Street entrance will have lift access to the ground floor.
Guests are encouraged to register for catering purposes.
Those interested in attending the event can register via the MDHS website, or by contacting 5461-0333 by Thursday, September 18.
The event will be held from 9 am to 1 pm tomorrow, September 20.
