MDHS is now taking bookings for the wellness program, run in partnership with Cancer Council Victoria, set to start this month.

“This is a group program to empower patients on their cancer journey,” MDHS exercise physiologist Sian Williams said.

“The program aims to educate participants with practical strategies to manage their condition effectively while enhancing their physical and social wellbeing.

“Each 90 minute session over eight weeks will provide a welcoming and supportive environment, where participants can engage in exercise, share their experiences and connect with others facing similar challenges.”

The Managing Cancer and Exercise wellness program is open to anyone with a cancer diagnosis, undergoing treatment or who has completed cancer treatment.

“We know cancer affects many people in different ways, and we welcome families, friends and carers to join us for the education sessions as an important part of the support network,” Ms Williams said.

“Regular exercise is a vital component of cancer care, offering numerous benefits before, during and after treatment.

“Participants have reported improvements in quality of life, a decrease in treatment-related side effects, and enhanced emotional wellbeing.”

The group program will run every Monday at the Health and Movement Centre in Maryborough from February 24 to April 14, from 2 to 3.30 pm.

“The sessions provide a fun and supportive environment to learn, exercise, share experiences and build peer support,” Ms Williams said.

“The program covers topics such as healthy eating, managing fatigue and emotional wellness. Participants can participate in a personalised exercise plan under expert guidance.

“This program not only enhances quality of life but also provides protective benefits during and after treatment.”

To find out more or enrol contact Ms Williams at 5461-0333 (and press one) by Monday, February 17, 2025.

Individuals, family members or carers can self-refer to the program. Medical oncologists, GPs, nurses and allied health professionals can also provide a referral.

An assessment is required before starting the program.
