MDHS named finalist in state awards
Third time’s the charm for the Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS) after once again being named a finalist in the 2024 Victorian Public Healthcare Awards.
This year the health service is recognised in the Excellence in Public Sector Residential Aged Care Services category for its innovative project All Aboard — From Fire Emergency to Cruise Ship.
“We are thrilled to be recognised as a finalist in the state-wide healthcare awards,” MDHS CEO Nickola Allan said.
Ms Allan said a glimpse into the award entry shows when the Avoca residential community faced evacuation during the February fires, the team transformed adversity into an opportunity.
“We created a ‘cruise ship’ experience for residents during their 10-day stay at our Maryborough and Dunolly campuses,” she said.
“With residents steering the course of their own ‘ship’, we turned what could have been a challenging time into a fun, holiday-like adventure.”
According to Ms Allan, this extraordinary effort was a true team collaboration across all MDHS campuses, ensuring the safety of 29 residents while fostering new friendships, unforgettable moments and top-notch care.
“I am so proud of our team’s ability to turn an emergency situation into something special for our residents,” she said.
“It was all hands on deck, and the care, compassion and teamwork made all the difference.
“A big thank you to our incredible staff, residents and their families for your resilience, cooperation and support.”
This is the third year in a row MDHS has been a finalist in the awards, which recognise excellence in public healthcare and the achievements of Victorian healthcare workers, volunteers, and public health services.
Last year the health service’s Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) — Case Load Model of Care was shortlisted in the Excellence in Women’s Health category.
In 2022, MDHS was also a finalist in the Health Service of the Year category.
The winners for this year’s awards will be announced at a ceremony next month.
