The start of the school year provides an opportunity for parents, caregivers and schools to encourage children to enjoy healthy, balanced meals throughout the school day.

National Lunchbox Week provides information for families as they return to the routine of daily lunchbox packing.

MDHS has dietitian services that provide education, advice and programs to promote healthy eating and modified diets to encourage good nutritional habits.

MDHS dietitian Emajun Patten said a well-balanced lunch plays a vital role in keeping children energised and focused.

“To create a nutritious lunch, aim for a variety of food groups such as fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and water,” she said.

Ms Patten said involving children in lunch preparation can be a great way to encourage healthier choices.

“Letting children help pick out their lunch items gives them a sense of ownership and can make them more likely to eat what has been packed,” she said.

National Lunchbox Week is a wonderful reminder to rethink how we approach meal planning and help make back-to-school time enjoyable.

“With a little creativity and attention to balance, families can ensure their children are set up for a successful, healthy school year.”

National Lunchbox Week is an initiative of Nutrition Australia that aims to inspire Australian families to create enjoyable and healthy lunchboxes.

It also supports schools, early childhood settings, teachers and educators to share inclusive lunchbox messages within their school and early childhood community.
