MDCA retain Sharp Shield in convincing fashion, defeating Grenville by eight wickets

The Maryborough District Cricket Association (MDCA) has dominantly retained the coveted Sharp Shield, defeating the Grenville Cricket Association by eight wickets at Hedges Oval on Sunday.

Laanecoorie Dunolly’s Alex Cook lived up to his namesake and cooked up a memorable man of the match performance, taking four wickets in his first five overs to finish with figures of 5/21 as Grenville were bowled out for 122.

Cook’s club teammate, Nafis Shaikh, led an entertaining run chase, with his 62 not out the catalyst for the MDCA to comfortably reach their target in the 26th over.

“I think it was a good team performance, really clinical, everybody did what was asked of them and played their role perfectly,” MDCA captain Sam Bartlett said after being presented with the shield.

“We wanted to make sure we won the shield for a third year in a row, so we had to make sure we put our best foot forward.”

With overcast conditions covering Hedges Oval at the start of play and with success bowling first last representative cricket season, Bartlett opted for his team to bowl first after winning the toss, handing the new ball to Beaufort’s Theo Trevelyan-Clark and Laane teammate Josh Fitzpatrick.

After some struggles bowling against Colts Phelans the day before, Trevelyan-Clark delivered a statement of intent early, as the first ball of the day was edged just outside the reach of his club captain, Brandon Walsh, at second slip.

Surviving that instant scare, Grenville openers Patrick Graham and Ned Uren readied to settle in for the long haul, navigating the first eight overs without loss and scoring five boundaries.

With Grenville smooth sailing, Trevelyan-Clark delivered a double dagger to both openers, first trapping Uren for an LBW dismissal, sending the star Derrinallum batter packing for 15 in the ninth over, before bowling Graham for 13 in his next over.

Now suddenly on the back foot at 2/30, Linton’s Rory Fisher and Lismore’s Cooper Cahill, who represented the MDCA in the under 17 Kirton Shield last season, started to get the runs flowing for Grenville against Lachlan Oddie and Asim Ahktar.

A change of bowling did the trick for the MDCA, as Alex Cook produced a magical spell which spun the tide into his team’s favour.

Immediately after conceding a boundary to Cahill, who was looking to attack the off-spinner, Cook forced an error from Cahill with the last ball of his first over, resulting in an Oliver Bennett catch that sent Cahill packing for 20.

Shortly after the drinks break, where Grenville sat at 3/84, Cook conjured up a second breakthrough courtesy of a diving catch from Shaikh at mid-on, removing Joshua Foley for five.

That wicket sparked Cook to take three wickets in his preceding four overs, first pushing Aidan Graham out of his crease, allowing the quick thinking William Coutts to do the rest, with Carisbrook’s wicketkeeper completing a sharp stumping to have Grenville reeling at 5/94 after Graham was gone for one.

Cook added the big wicket of the persistent Rory Fisher in his next over, as the Linton batsmen attempted to pump Cook down the ground, but picked out Shaikh, who covered some considerable ground to complete the catch just shy of the mid-on boundary to dismiss Fisher for 35.

Cook had his five-wicket haul shortly thereafter, as the scoreboard pressure from Cook and fellow spinner Ben Evans became too much for Lincoln Willems, who was removed for four thanks to an LBW dismissal from Cook.

With Laane’s spinner placing them in a commanding position at 7/107, the MDCA weren’t keen on letting their foot off the gas, stubbornly wanting to make quick work of Grenville’s tail.

After the partnership of Zac Fisher and Walker looked to bring Grenville to a more defendable total, Walsh delivered the final three wickets in the space of an over.

Cook turned from wicket taker to catcher for Walsh’s first breakt-hrough, taking a good catch on the leg side boundary to remove Walker for seven.

Two balls later, Walsh bowled Marcus Graham for a duck before ending the innings two balls after that when Zac Fisher popped a ball up for Fitzpatrick on the leg side, who took a simple catch to end Grenville’s innings all out for 122.

With Trevelyan-Clark taking 2/22 from six overs at the top of the innings, the spin duo of Cook and Walsh did the rest, with Cook leading with 5/21 from seven overs and Walsh contributing 3/10 from 2.5 overs.

Reigning Ken Gibbs medallist Tom Hannett and Maryborough’s Bennett opened the MDCA’s run chase that needed to reach 123.

The MDCA’s innings hit a major snag in the fifth over when Cahill castled Hannett for three to hand Grenville the early wicket they desperately needed.

With Shaikh joining Bennett at the crease as Grenville searched for another breakthrough, the duo meticulously sped towards the objective, punishing any off-line balls to the boundary.

Sitting at 1/35 after 10 overs, the pair hit 14 off Patrick Graham’s first over and attempted to show the same aggression towards Marcus Graham.

After hitting back-to-back boundaries off Marcus Graham, Bennett smashed a ball straight to Patrick Graham, who accepted the gift with a collected catch to remove Bennett for 32 and place the MDCA at 2/60.

The new partnership of Coutts and Shaikh kept the MDCA motoring with their lightning speed between the wickets, routinely finding quick singles while Shaikh tightened the screws with some brilliant boundaries.

Coutts survived two tough caught and bowled chances to help his team reach 2/95 at the drinks break.

From there, Shaikh took control of the contest, bringing up a skillful half-century before belting the winning boundary through the leg side to keep the Sharp Shield in MDCA hands.

Shaikh ended the innings not out on 62, joined by Coutts, who was unbeaten on 15.

Bartlett said Sunday’s convincing performance will give his team plenty of confidence ahead of February’s Melbourne Country Week.

“We won the toss, had a bowl and tried to knock them over for as cheaply as we could and then get the runs,” he said.

“With our batting depth, we can afford to bowl first, restrict sides to whatever we can, and then make the runs with the bat.

“Young Theo (Trevelyan-Clark) up the top got a couple of wickets of their better batsmen as they started to get going.

“When Grenville was going alright there just before drinks, it was good to bring Cook on and he snared one and then two and all of a sudden he had five.

“Ollie (Bennett) has been very consistent for Maryborough this year at the top. We knew once he gets himself in, he hits the ball hard, hits the gaps well and runs well between the wickets.

“Nafis (Shaikh) also showed his class with a nice fifty.”
