MCDFNL’s 15 and under team advance to finals
The MCDFNL’s 15 and under representative team has been invited to the prestigious Victoria Association Championship Finals Day after a Grand Final appearance at the Western Association Championships.
Held at the Warrnambool City Netball Association on Sunday, May 31, the league’s most promising junior netballers competed against their talented peers across three age groups.
With victories over South West District, Warrnambool District, Central Highlands and the Ballarat Netball Association, as well as a draw with the Warrnambool City Netball Association, the MCDFNL ended the 15 and under round robin phase in third, earning a semi-final date with the Ballarat Football Netball League (BFNL).
After the BFNL won a round robin epic 12-11, the MCDFNL looked to enact a sweet taste of revenge in the do-or-die final.
With a spot in the Grand Final on the line, the two talented teams produced a carbon copy of their gripping encounter from earlier in the day, trading goals as time rapidly ticked away.
While the rematch was equally extraordinary, the MCDFNL 15 and under’s ensured the result was uniquely different, vanquishing the BFNL 21-20.
The MCDFNL attempted to harness that memorable victory into the Grand Final, but the Hampden Football Netball League proved too good in the decider, completing an undefeated campaign with a 23-4 victory.
Despite the disappointing end, the MCDFNL 15 and under’s remarkable runner-up finish has earned them selection to next weekend’s state championships, where they’ll compete against Victoria’s best junior teams at the State Netball Centre in Parkville.
The MCDFNL’s 13 and under and 17 and under also battled hard at the Western Association Championships, with the 13 and under’s earning a victory over the Mininera District Netball Association.
