MCDFNL Round 16 Football Preview — Maldon vs Avoca
Fresh from the bye, Avoca travels to Bill Woodfull Reserve looking to complete a season double over Maldon after escaping with a dramatic one-point victory when the two sides met earlier in the season.

While the Bulldogs are out of finals contention, they still have the opportunity to influence the make-up of the top eight. With no finals pressure, Avoca can play with freedom and would take great satisfaction in denting the Bombers’ finals hopes.
The Bulldogs will again look to experienced midfielder Daniel Howell to lead the way around the stoppages, while prolific full-forward Nathan Coghlan remains their biggest attacking weapon. If Avoca can win the contested ball and provide Coghlan with quality opportunities inside 50, they are capable of pushing the Bombers all the way, just as they did in the first meeting.
Maldon, however, enters the contest in excellent form and knows every remaining game is vital in its bid to secure a finals berth.
The Bombers were outstanding in last week’s 86-point demolition of Lexton, with Darcy Kelly leading the way in a polished team performance. He received excellent support from Harrison Tulloch, Damian Wust, Noah Thompson, Thomas McNeill and Tristian Rowe as Maldon controlled the contest from start to finish.
The Bombers’ forward line was particularly impressive, with Harrison Tulloch finishing with six goals in a dominant display inside 50, while Maldon also received valuable scoreboard contributions from several players as it continually capitalised on its opportunities.
There will be no shortage of motivation for the home side after suffering that heartbreaking one-point defeat to Avoca earlier in the season. The Bombers will be determined to square the ledger, while the Bulldogs will be looking to prove they can once again upset a side with plenty to play for.
The midfield battle shapes as the key to the contest. If Daniel Howell can match the influence of Kelly, Wust and Thompson around the stoppages, Avoca will give itself every chance.
However, if Maldon can reproduce the form it displayed against Lexton and generate the same quality supply to Tulloch and its forwards, the Bombers will be difficult to stop.
With Avoca playing for pride and Maldon fighting to keep its finals campaign alive, expect a hard-fought contest. The Bombers’ recent form and home-ground advantage should see them prevail.
