MCDFNL Round 13 Football Preview Maryborough Giants v Dunolly
The Maryborough Giants will be looking to continue their impressive run of form when they welcome Dunolly to Hedges Oval on Saturday.
The Giants remain firmly in the hunt for a finals berth despite a disappointing 39-point loss to premiership contenders Talbot last weekend. The Giants were well in the contest during the first half before the Hawks’ class dazzled after the main break. Riley Govan again led from the front and was well supported by Scott Miller, Jay Garley, Lachlan Bates, Sam Spink and Austen Murphy.
Before last week’s defeat, the Giants had won four of their previous five matches and will be confident of bouncing back against a Dunolly side still searching for consistency.
The Eagles endured another difficult afternoon in round 12, suffering a 137-point defeat to Newstead. Despite the scoreboard, Jay McDonald, Ryan Burt, Lachlan Tranter, Joel Fisher, Lachlan Watson and Bailey Morton never stopped competing and will again be called upon this weekend.
The Giants will look to gain control through the midfield, where Miller and Bates have been central to the club’s improvement. If they can provide quality supply to forwards Karson Guareschi, Rhys Egan, Matthew Walker and Atticus Cullinan, the Giants should create plenty of scoring opportunities.
Dunolly will need to pressure the Giants around stoppages and limit their ball movement through the corridor. The visitors have shown they can compete in patches but have struggled to sustain that intensity for four quarters against the competition’s stronger sides.
