MCDFNL Round 11 Netball Preview Trentham vs Lexton
Among round 11’s choc-filled schedule of mouth-watering A grade clashes, Lexton’s trip to Trentham is arguably the hardest to predict.
If this encounter were programmed for the start of May, the Tigers would’ve been the odds-on favourite. Yet with the Saints winning four of their last five games and Lexton currently on a four-game losing run, Saturday’s contest looks to be an intriguing affair.
A major caveat to Lexton’s sputtering spell of form is that three of those defeats came against teams heavily entrenched inside the top four in Avoca, Navarre and Carisbook.
With Caitlin Howell filling in admirably at goal defence alongside Eliza Bell and Shanae Hepworth while Ebony Howell and Cindy Teggerth filled her midcourt duties, the Tigers battled admirably last weekend against the Redbacks. Yet they couldn’t recover from a noticeable eight-goal quarter time deficit.
While Lexton has drifted away from the top four, the Saints have suddenly caught the Tigers in the standings following a nail-biting five-goal victory over Dunolly that severely boosted their finals outlook.
Caitlin Howell, Bell and Hepworth will have to be heavily vigilant of Trentham’s Hannah Weier, who’s sparked an offensive renaissance since her first appearance against Harcourt with 124 goals in three matches.
Another key matchup pits Saints player-coach Jessica Walker, who was instrumental in the Saints surviving Dunolly’s second-half rally last weekend, and Madelyne Brennan against Lexton’s dangerous shooting tandem of Rachel Phelan and Charlize Kennedy.
