MCDFNL Round 10 Football Preview Newstead vs Campbells Creek
After shocking the MCDFNL with a gripping victory over Harcourt, Newstead will go from hunters to being hunted when they take on Campbells Creek.
Any questions about the Steaders’ premiership credentials were thrown out the window last weekend at Harcourt Recreation Reserve, overcoming a 16-point deficit at half time with five unanswered goals in the third quarter to conquer the previously undefeated Lions by 12 points.
Despite being under fire throughout the first half, the Steaders remained composed, with Michael Dalrymple, William Moran and Cordie McKendry denying several Harcourt attacks with key intercept marks.
When they began to take control after half time, the Steaders pounced with Lachlan O’Brien, Rhys Smith and Sam Winnard powering a decisive third-quarter flourish.
Saturday’s sensational victory has set expectations previously seen as heavily optimistic at the start of the season, with Newstead now entrenched in the battle for the top four.
The Steaders will attempt to boost those double chance aspirations against a Campbells Creek team that nearly delivered a similar round nine shock against Natte Bealiba with a brilliant performance.
With Jesse Presser providing a commanding presence up forward while Dylan Stevens, James Haber and Jack Larkin were typically excellent, the Magpies flew to an 11-point lead at quarter time.
While the Swans eventually accelerated away with 11 goals in the second and third quarters, Campbells Creek remained within touching distance until the final siren, showcasing their competitive capabilities when at full strength.
