MCDFNL Round 10 Football Preview Maryborough Giants vs Harcourt
The Maryborough Giants face one of their biggest tests of the season this weekend when they host Harcourt at Hedges Oval.
The Giants enter the clash in good form, having won three of their past four matches. Their most recent outing saw them overcome a slow start to defeat Maldon by 22 points, kicking six final-quarter goals to storm home in difficult conditions.
Brandon Carter was outstanding in the final term, while Cody Wright, Jonathon Short, Rhys Wagstaff, Karson Guareschi and Matthew Walker were all among the Giants’ best players.
The Giants have shown significant improvement since the opening rounds of the season and will take confidence from victories over Natte Bealiba, Newstead and Maldon.
Harcourt, meanwhile, will arrive at Hedges Oval with plenty to prove after suffering its first defeat of the season. The Lions were upset by Newstead last weekend, managing just five goals in a 12-point loss after leading by 16 points at half time.
Despite that defeat, Harcourt remains one of the competition’s premier teams. Players such as Mark Noonan, Braydon Vaz, Thomas Walters, Billy Quirk and Taylar McKnight have been instrumental in the Lions’ strong season and will be keen to respond.
Scott Miller and Cody Wright have been driving the Giants’ recent resurgence, while Harcourt boasts one of the competition's deepest and most experienced on-ball divisions.
The Giants will also need to be disciplined defensively against a Harcourt side that has regularly posted big scores throughout the season.
