Cam McClure was selected to play his second Sheffield Shield match for Victoria, named in the final XI to take on Western Australia, which started yesterday at the CitiPower Centre in St Kilda.

McClure was given the opportunity to play after the team made the decision to rest Australian fast bowler Scott Boland, while experienced bowler Jon Holland has suffered a calf injury and is another casualty, replaced by debutant Ruwantha Kellapotha.

Western Australia won the toss and elected to bat, with McClureopening the bowling alongside Mitchell Perry for a very youthful Victorian fast bowling attack, with Perry, McClure and all-rounder Will Sutherland having played just 41 first-class matches between them.

He put in a solid opening spell of bowling at the time of print deadline, with his first six overs of the match yielding just nine runs, while he was able to beat the bat of both Cameron Bancroft and Sam Whiteman on multiple occasions, making it difficult for both batsmen to score runs.

McClure’s selection means that it is the first time he is able to play a Sheffield Shield game in front of family and friends in Victoria, having made his debut — also against the Western Australian team — in March in Perth, where he took 2/67.

McClure was rewarded for his form in the Toyota Second XI, having taken 4/95 across both innings in Victoria’s draw with New South Wales in September, leading the way in the first innings in particular with a haul of 4/67.

At the time of production, Western Australia were sitting at 0/26, with Bancroft sitting on 19 and Whiteman on seven not out.

The match will continue until Thursday afternoon, with Victoria looking for their first win of the 2022/23 Sheffield Shield season.
