Maryborough’s 17 and under netball season is still alive, with the Magpies defeating Golden Square by five goals at Queen Elizabeth Oval to progress to a semi-final meeting with Kangaroo Flat.
Eager to atone for a loss to the Bulldogs in their last meeting during the home-and-away season, it was the Magpies who made a fast start, scoring 11 goals to eight to open up a three-goal lead at the opening break.
Abbey Nalder was able to do away with a nervous start to pour in eight goals in the opening period.
The second quarter was Maryborough’s best for the day. With the Magpies looking potent through mid-court, Ella Bartlett and Nalder were able to work efficiently in the goal circle and benefitted from great passing, with Nalder adding another 12 goals throughout the quarter.
In all, they scored 14 goals, while some important defensive play from Ella Patten and Finley Wagstaff saw them restrict Square to just 10 goals for the quarter, allowing the Magpies to lead 25-18 at the main break.
Square came out of half time looking to get back into the game, and while they were able to win the quarter, they were unable to make significant headway into the Magpies’ lead, with an 11-goal to 13 quarter still enabling them to hold on to a 36-31 lead at the final break.
The Magpies were able to make a fast start in the final quarter, scoring seven of the first 10 goals to open up a nine-goal lead. However, Square continued to push with their season on the line, and was able to close the margin to just four goals at times during the last quarter.
However, they were able to hold their nerve throughout, ensuring they would progress through to the next week of the finals with a 48-43 victory.
Two of the more impressive performers proved to be Nalder, who scored 38 goals, while Abbey Sealey also earned plaudits for her work in wing defence.
Their first semi final with Kangaroo Flat now beckons, and with the Magpies coming within 10 goals of Flat in their earlier meeting this season, will be looking to rectify that in order to secure a preliminary final berth.
