While Maryborough have endured a tougher A grade season in 2023/24, the club has shown glimpses of its future potential, with the under 16s seeking a premiership in the Castlemaine and District Cricket Association (CDCA).

With just three clubs able to get an under 16s team this year, the decision was made to send the Owls, along with Colts Phelans and Carisbrook, to the CDCA to continue their development, with the Owls benefitting the most during the season.

With the nine-game home-and-away portion of the CDCA completed, Maryborough finished as a runaway leader with seven wins from their seven completed games.

They are now in the box seat to progress to the grand final, as well as earn hosting rights, if they can successfully defeat North Castlemaine/Guildford across the weekend, with a two-day game held at Princes Park.

It is a team Maryborough has yet to face this season, with the scheduled clash in round four abandoned.

Nevertheless, there is good reason for the Owls to be confident.

With the bat, the Owls have been a clear leader in scoring this season, averaging almost 190 runs a game, including hauls of 294 against Barkers Creek/Campbells Creek and 284 against Muckleford.

Seven players have scored above 100 runs for the season, with Lachie Condie leading the way with 204 runs, while Oliver Cassidy (174), Jasper Trickey (159), Keegan Doherty (132), Cale Wright (117), Lachlan Roche (105) and Jaxon Carmody (101) also enjoying a strong campaign.

With the ball, the Owls have also shined, and it’s a brotherly act at the top of the charts, with Mason Trickey taking eight wickets to lead the way, while Jasper sits second with six wickets. Sam Ross and Roche have taken five wickets apiece, while Carmody has added four.

The two-day semi-final sees action begin at 8.45 am on both Saturday and Sunday.
