It’s a result the blue-and-white faithful, and new coach Jack Schafer, has felt that they have deserved through the balance of the season so far.
But Maryborough’s 2-1 victory over Victoria Park on Sunday at Jubilee Oval was a terrific reward for a team who has started to prove that they are a tricky assignment to play on their home deck, and came thanks to a superb first half performance which saw them lead by two goals at the main break.
Maryborough were able to score goals through Julian Callea and Garry George in the first half as they shot out of the blocks to leave Victoria Park shellshocked, and led 2-0.
While Maryborough weren’t able to score again in the second half, they did have to defend resolutely as Victoria Park pushed hard to get back into the game, and were rewarded with a goal through Nick McKee.
Ultimately, however, Mary-borough did enough to score their first win of the season, moving them up to seven points alongside Bacchus Marsh, although with a worse goal differential which sees them remain on the bottom for now.
Maryborough will now be hoping to take their good form into a clash with third-placed Ballarat North United, which will see them host at Jubilee Oval again.
It was a terrific day all-round for Maryborough, with their under 14s taking a terrific 12-0 win over Vikings Blue. The blue-and-whites were relentless, scoring six goals in the first half, before doubling their tally throughout the second half.
Joravar Dhanju was the star, scoring four goals, while Darcy Wood also netted a hattrick, scoring three goals of his own. Brayden Martin’s brace, as well as goals from Nicholas Soulsby, Zag Eggers and
Jacob Antolini, completed the scoring as the blue-and-whites moved up to sixth ahead of a crucial clash with fifth-placed Ballarat North United next Sunday at Russell Square.
