Maryborough returns home after a bruising encounter against Eaglehawk last week which saw them record their fourth win of the season. Their next assignment — looking for back-to-back wins against Strathfieldsaye.
It was a back-and-forth game against the Hawks last week, with the Magpies recovering from a slow start to hit back when it mattered, with a late Keely Hare goal allowing them to take a one-goal victory.
Hare, who moved back into goal shooter for the game on the weekend, returned to her goalscoring form that the Magpies are accustomed to, scoring 33 goals in their triumph.
Eliza Roughead and Jordan MacIlwain were named the Magpies’ best players in the victory.
All eyes now turn to this weekend against Strathfieldsaye as the Magpies look to take advantage of the opportunity to record back-to-back victories.
However, to do that, the Magpies will have to reverse the result suffered in round six, when they went down to the Storm by three goals at Tannery Lane.
On that occasion, the Storm overran Maryborough in the final quarter after the Magpies were able to turn for home up by four goals at the final change, eventually recording a 48-45 victory.
In what is a tight battle to be best of the rest for what is a rather lopsided ladder in 2022, Maryborough will look to keep the pressure on sixth-placed Kyneton, sitting half a game in front of the Magpies. With the Tigers playing against winless Golden Square, however, it seems unlikely that the Magpies could leapfrog them into sixth with a victory.
Around the club, Maryborough’s under 17 team now has a golden chance to secure a berth in the finals with a win against the Storm. After beating Eaglehawk by eight goals last week, the Magpies sit three and a half games ahead of South Bendigo in sixth, and a win would not only seal their participation in the finals, but it can also keep applying the pressure on third-placed Sandhurst for the double-chance.
