Maryborough will seek their fourth win of the Bendigo Football Netball League season this weekend when they take on seventh-placed Eaglehawk on Saturday.

After the high of collecting their first win in five starts against Golden Square, the Magpies were brought back to earth last week when a strong Gisborne side were able to control the game right from the outset and won by 36 goals.

Despite the loss, coach Alicia Cassidy was impressed by the form of Keely Hare, who shifted from her usual position of goal shooter to goal keeper for this game, competing well in the Gisborne goal circle. Maggie Tranter was another who impressed on Saturday.

Although finals have been out of the equation for a number of weeks, a major positive for the Magpies is that they have been able to bolster their goal shooting options in recent weeks, trialling different combinations in the goal circle. Against Square, the Magpies went with a combination of Hare and under 17 player Abbey Nalder, while against Gisborne, Nalder was paired with experienced goal attack Jordan MacIlwain while Hare went to defence.

In Maryborough’s earlier clash with Eaglehawk in round five, the Magpies proved way too strong for the Hawks, taking their second win of the year by 26 goals.

A similar success for the Magpies on Saturday will see them do the double on the Hawks this year, and with sixth-placed Kyneton playing top side Kangaroo Flat, they’ll also have a chance to move within half a game of the Tigers.

Outside of the A grade game, there’s also plenty of excitement for the club’s 17 and under team, with the chance to all but secure a finals spot on the line against the Hawks on Saturday. A win could see the Magpies move as much as three and a half games clear inside the top five with four games to go.
