Maryborough had their most competitive outing since round two, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a 78-point loss to Kangaroo Flat at Dower Park.
The Magpies needed the support of Flat to field an additional six players on Saturday, but to their credit, they fought hard to ensure they made a contest, particularly in the first half, before the Kangaroos ran away with the game.
The first quarter saw the Kangaroos kick the opening four goals of the contest, but Maryboroughfought back hard to reduce the margin to 12 points at the opening change.
Matt Johnston opened the scoring for the Magpies courtesy of a strong mark and finish, before a long goal from Joel Swatton gave them their second. Another strong mark to Johnston gave him his second goal of the term as Maryborough put together a superb finish to the quarter.
Maryborough continued to fight hard in the second quarter. Johnston kicked his third goal after a fierce battle with his Kangaroo Flat opponent in the goalsquare, while Mitch McClure also added a goal from point blank range.
However, Kangaroo Flat were able to win the quarter, courtesy of three goals, to allow them to lead by 21 points at the main break.
Maryborough were still in the game as the third quarter started, and Logan Howell was able to kick his first senior goal to keep the Magpies in touch early in the term. However, that was as good as it got for the Magpies, with the Kangaroos kicking the final six goals of the term to extend their lead by 59 points by the final change.
The Kangaroos were able to keep extending their lead in the last term thanks to four goals, while Maryborough were able to land another goal courtesy of Jed Lowndes, with the Magpies putting together a reasonable effort after a tough period.
Coby Perry was again the Magpies’ best player as he relished the wet conditions, while Kya Lanfranchi, Joel Swatton, Aidan Medlyn, Seb Collins and Josh Britten were also named in the best throughout the afternoon.
Unfortunately, Maryborough’s under 18s were unable to stop Kangaroo Flat from taking a comfortable win, scoring a 112-point win over the Magpies, who were unable to score a goal until their two last quarter efforts from John Corn.
Cooper Mark, Jack Skinner, Judd Stevens, Joe Lovel, Brodie Quinlan and Sebastian Lambourn were all named in the best on a tough day for the 18s, who required nine players from the Kangaroos to get a game together.
The Magpies will now have a week off, with the Bendigo Football Netball League playing interleague football this weekend.
