Maryborough provides update to BFNL clubs and supporters

Maryborough will be holding their best and fairest on Thursday night, but not before vice-president Daryl Groves delivered an update to Bendigo Football Netball League (BFNL) members, teams and supporters in last Sunday’s Michelsen Medal count.

Groves took the night as an opportunity to thank opposing clubs and the BFNL board for their support throughout the season.

“To say that it would be a challenging year would be an understatement for our club,” he said.

“The support of the BFNL board has been instrumental, and it’s been able to get us to the end of the season, they were very quick, concise and emphatic in their support of our club early in the season, and they’ve followed that all the way through, and we’d like to publicly thank them for the support throughout the season.

“Equally, we’d like to thank all the clubs. The presidents, committees, coaches, players and supporters. It’s only through the support of your clubs and the board that our club managed to get through to the end of the season.

“It was critical for us to be able to do that, it’s allowed us the opportunity to draw breath, collect our resources and forge ahead, and that’s certainly our intent.”

Groves collected his thoughts and referenced the traditional Australian spirit in closing his speech.

“In one of the many interviews, one of the reporters asked if this was a year to forget for Maryborough. Quite clearly, no, it has not been,” he said.

“In fact, there’s an unwritten story that should be spoken about, which is the Australian spirit of helping a mate when they’re down.

“And that has never been prevalent, and we are very blessed to be part of this football community and the BFNL, because without your collective support, we would not be here right now.

“We look forward to respecting your support, and pay the ultimate compliment of being able to compete on equal terms in the years to come.”
