While sixth place is out of reach for Maryborough this season, the Magpies will be looking to show Kyneton that they might have been worthy of finishing in that position this weekend when the two teams meet on Saturday.
Nevertheless, tomorrow’s game is the culmination of what has been an improved season for Maryborough, chalking up five wins and a number of competitive performances along the way against teams that will be playing finals, a big improvement on their one-win season in what was a COVID-interrupted 2021.
There is also continued scope for improvement within the team over the next handful of years, with the 17 and under team a confirmed starter for finals in two weeks time, while all four teams that represent the club have taken four or more wins this season.
The team’s last chance of beating a top five team came and went last Saturday afternoon, but a fast-starting South Bendigo put any hopes of achieving a big win to bed with a strong first half which saw them nine goals up at half time.
However, the fight that was put up in the second half, with the Bloods having to fight hard for their 27 goals, has become a signature of most Maryborough games this season, with their tenacity and ability to continue fighting against the tide a big reason why the Magpies A grade team have taken their five wins.
On Saturday, Tori Chandler and Eliza Roughead were impressive in what was a very physical game, while Keely Hare scored 37 goals.
Maryborough will now look to reverse the result of their A grade game against Kyneton from round nine — a game which saw the Magpies give up a solid lead in the final quarter to be overrun by the Tigers, losing by three goals as a result.
On that occasion, Chandler was also influential as she continued to provide great drive in the Magpies’ mid-court, while Chrissy Hooper was also influential for the day.
Regardless of the result, the Magpies will not move from seventh position on the ladder, with the Tigers sitting a game and a half ahead of the Magpies, while their percentage is high enough to prevent them from losing a position to eighth-placed Eaglehawk.
However, with a big 2023 season coming up, it would be ideal for the Magpies to get a head-start on their campaign for next season with a confidence-boosting win on Saturday against a team with a similar record.
