Maryborough will have the chance to cement their position in the top four of the A reserve competition when they host the winless Golden Square this weekend.

The Magpies currently sit fourth, but there are endless opportunities to increase their gap on the chasing pack, particularly sixth-placed Castlemaine, who are taking on third-placed Kangaroo Flat.

Should Maryborough win their game against Square, they are bound to benefit, whichever way that game goes.

Two weeks ago, the Magpies struggled to get through the challenge of South Bendigo, who were able to push them all the way.

It took a last quarter fightback from the Magpies to overhaul the Bloods, eventually finishing up one-goal winners.

That result means the Magpies are likely to not take Golden Square lightly this week, even though they have lost their last two games heavily to Gisborne and Sandhurst.

The Bulldogs were able to run Kangaroo Flat very close a few weeks ago, and the Magpies will be mindful to not let slip the opportunity to keep up with the best teams in the competition.

The Magpies look set to benefit by regaining Ella Patten this weekend, who provides so much drive and protection in defence, which will again help the likes of Maggie Tranter and Amanda Durbridge play their natural games.

Elsewhere, in B grade, Maryborough will be hoping to break through for their first win when they host the similarly winless Square, while B reserve will also look to push the seventh-placed Square and score their first win.

The third-placed 17 and under squad face a big task against the second-placed Square in a blockbuster match, with the Bulldogs coming off their first loss of the season against a powerful Sandhurst unit.
