Levelling up towards completion, the Maryborough Hospital’s $115 million redevelopment and expansion project has reached a construction milestone with the building now topped out.

Last week, the new medical facility officially reached its maximum height following the placement of the last concrete slab at level two.

With works ramping up, the development is expected to finish later this year and will see the hospital boasting a new urgent care centre, two operating theatres and recovery spaces, a day medical centre with imaging, pharmacy and pathology services, consultant suites and additional car parking.

Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS) CEO Nickola Allan welcomed this latest achievement and said it brings Maryborough one step closer to quality healthcare.

“Topping out is a really important milestone because [we] can really start to see the building as a whole,” she said.

“It’s great to see it coming out of the ground and now internally it’s going to start taking shape as well so it’s an exciting time for us as an organisation.

“I think it’s going to be a significant building in the town for years to come — it’s going to give the community increased access to care, there will be more opportunities to engage with specialist consultants and an additional birthing suite which means more babies being born.”

Featuring a new 32-bed inpatient and maternity unit, the completed hospital will ensure more local women have the option to give birth in Maryborough, closer to their family and support networks.

The modern design and layout will also improve patient flow and deliver a safer and more efficient workplace for staff and better care for patients — giving doctors and nurses the facilities they need to treat an additional 4000 patients every year.

“The massive redevelopment of the Maryborough hospital will make sure our community has access to the very best care, close to home,” Member for Ripon Martha Haylett said.

“It will also deliver world-class facilities for our hardworking local nurses and doctors to work in.”

Previously, the State Government also invested $4 million in setting up an accommodation hub for healthcare students and trainees in Maryborough, which opened in March 2023.

Another $4.3 million was contributed last month towards the development of a new state-of-the-art logistics hub at MDHS, which will be opened alongside the redeveloped hospital.
