Maryborough were unable to stop Eaglehawk from taking an 84-point win at Canterbury Park on Saturday, despite their best efforts.

The Magpies were reasonably competitive throughout the game and were able to hit the scoreboard in all four quarters, but were ultimately unable to quell the scoring power of the Hawks, who shared 10 different goalkickers from their 19 goals.

The first quarter was Maryborough’s most competitive of the day, scoring two goals. Aidan Hare was able to score an opportunistic goal when he intercepted an errant Eaglehawk handball to score from close range, and Thomas Gardam provided a major highlight when he took a strong overhead contested mark, before finishing on the run from right on the 50 metre arc to give the Magpies some spark. However, five goals from the Hawks saw them trail by 18 points at the first change.

The Hawks pulled away in the second quarter, scoring four goals to the Magpies’ one — that coming through Liam Latch, whose tackle pressure saw him rewarded with a set shot that later turned into a certain goal through Eaglehawk discipline, gifting him a 50 metre penalty to take him to the goal line. Despite that, the Magpies would still trail by 37 points at the long break.

The third quarter was a similar affair to the second, with Eaglehawk putting through another four goals for the quarter to Maryborough’s one — their goal would come through Brady Neill, who was able to launch from 55 metres out and put it through with some distance to spare. It was not enough to prevent the Magpies from trailing by 59 points at the final change.

Eaglehawk enjoyed their best quarter of the afternoon in the final term as they piled on six goals to give themselves some more percentage in their battle to stay in touch with the top five. For their part, Maryborough was able to score two goals for the quarter. The first came through Neill, which was a carbon copy of his third quarter effort from distance, before Hare scored his second goal from a free kick for their final goal of the afternoon.

Eaglehawk would go on to win 19.12 (126) to 6.6 (42).

Gardam, Hare, Latch, Coby Perry, Liam Murphy and Neill all enjoyed solid games and were named in the best players as a result.

The Magpies now look ahead to the challenge of hosting second-placed Strathfieldsaye on Saturday afternoon at Princes Park.
