It was a tough day for Maryborough on a windy Saturday afternoon, going down to Gisborne by 172 points.

The Magpies were up against it travelling to the ladder leaders, but were at least able to restrict Gisborne to no more than seven goals in all four quarters, a respectable effort given the Bulldogs’ status as the best attacking team in the competition.

In fact, it was Maryborough who got off to the perfect start within two minutes as they were able to kick the first goal of the game. After a 50 metre penalty took Patrick Van Der Pol to the edge of the centre square, he was able to catch the Bulldogs’ defence napping as his long range effort sailed over the pack and bounced through for the first goal of the game.

However, that was as good as it got for the Magpies, with the goal sparking Gisborne into action. They would go on and kick six goals in the first quarter to lead by 36 points at the first change.

The second quarter saw Gisborne stretch their advantage and dominate, kicking another six goals from 14 scoring shots, whilst restricting Maryborough to a scoreless quarter, enabling the Bulldogs to take an 80-point lead at the long break.

The Magpies were able to hit the scoreboard in the third quarter, but their two shots at goal were only minor scores. Meantime, the Bulldogs were on target for seven of their 10 shots, ensuring that they’d stretch their lead to 123 points at the final change.

The Bulldogs peppered the goals in the final quarter, kicking seven goals from 14 shots, while Maryborough were again unable to trouble the scorers, ensuring that the Bulldogs would go on to win 26.24 (180) to 1.2 (8).

Despite the loss, there were positive signs from Thomas Gardam, Coby Perry — who wore the #0 for the day in support of the Transport Accident Commission’s road safety round — Aidan Hare, Kya Lanfranchi, Nic Swan and Mitchell McClure.

Maryborough now moves on to a game against sixth-placed Eaglehawk this week as they continue to search for their first win of the 2022 season.
