An improved Maryborough were able to keep up with South Bendigo for large patches of the first half, but it wasn’t enough to prevent South Bendigo from taking a 134-point victory.

The Magpies sported their Indigenous jumper for the round as the Bendigo Football Netball League celebrated Indigenous Round, while impressive youngster Oscar Tatchell was rewarded for good form in the under 18s with his senior debut.

The Bloods got off to the better start, kicking four goals in the opening quarter, while holding the Magpies to just one behind.

The Magpies asked plenty of questions to open the second quarter, kicking five behinds while holding South Bendigo to two behinds before being rewarded. Jai Howell was collected high after taking a mark, and the ensuring 50 metre penalty saw him convert for the Magpies’ first of the day.

However, the Bloods were quick to snuff out any momentum with three quick goals.

Nevertheless, the Magpies kept fighting. Chris Freeman, in his 100th game, was providing a good forward 50 option, and took a good mark from a Darcy Bond kick to convert for the Magpies’ second of the afternoon to sit 39 points behind at half time.

The third quarter belonged to South Bendigo, as they kicked 11 goals. Maryborough’s sole response came through impressive youngster Tom Myers, who converted through a free kick.

Trailing by 102 points at the last change, Maryborough looked to fight the game out, but South Bendigo continued to attack the scoreboard, kicking the first four goals of the last quarter.

The impressive Howell got one back for Maryborough with a good snap for his second goal of the afternoon, before Matt Johnston added his name to the scoresheet with a good set shot from 40 out on a tight angle.

In a bright positive for the day, Liam Freeman was able to kick his first senior goal for the club when he was the recipient of a double 50 metre penalty which took him within goalscoring range, converting as a result.

Howell had an impressive afternoon and was named as Maryborough’s best player, as well as Kya Lanfranchi, Joel Swatton, Brady Neill, Tatchell and Chris.
