Maryborough were unable to stop South Bendigo from taking a strong win in their A grade encounter, going down by 35 goals.
It was a much more competitive effort from the Magpies than their round seven game, which they lost by 50 goals, and they were also able to hit the scoreboard with more regularity this time, scoring 39 goals for the afternoon.
South Bendigo made the better start, as they were able to make their opportunities count, scoring 17 goals from 19 shots. In the meantime, Maryborough were able to score on eight occasions, with Abbey Nalder scoring five times and Keely Hare three times.
Maryborough enjoyed a good second term as they were able to take it right up to the Bloods, scoring 13 goals, and, although the Bloods were still able to enjoy the better of the quarter, scoring 17 goals, it meant that with a 13-goal break at half time, the Magpies were able to keep South Bendigo honest. Hare added nine goals for the quarter, while Nalder scored another four.
However, the class of South Bendigo showed in the third term as they were able to enjoy a good quarter, scoring 19 goals while holding Maryborough to nine to turn for home leading by 23 goals. Hare added six goals in the quarter, while Nalder scored three.
South Bendigo finished proceedings with their best quarter of the day, scoring 21 goals to nine to eventually finish off strong winners. Hare finished with five more goals to finish with 23 goals for the day, while Nalder scored four more to take her tally to 16.
Elsewhere, Maryborough were competitive.
In B grade, the Magpies had a strong finish, but they were unable to stop South Bendigo from getting the job to eventually win by 20 goals.
It was a similar story in B reserve, where the Magpies lost by 23 goals.
The under 17s had the best result of the day, and were able to firm for finals, by winning by 31 goals. However, they will need to beat fifth-placed Strathfieldsaye next week to completely ensure they would make the finals, given they still sit two games and some percentage clear of Castlemaine.
