In what was a physical affair, Maryborough were unable to cap off co-captain Maggie Tranter’s 100th game for the club with a win, going down to South Bendigo by 12 goals.

Desperate to score a win against a top-five team in order to build some confidence ahead of a big campaign next year, the Magpies found themselves behind the eight ball early against the Bloods as they shot away in the first half, and couldn’t recover, despite their best efforts.

The Bloods were able to open up a four-goal lead at the first change after a 12-goal to eight opening exchange, and were determined to keep the Magpies at bay for the bulk of the afternoon.

South Bendigo had a strong second quarter, scoring 18 goals from 20 shots, proving to be a little bit cleaner in the goal circle than the Magpies, who would score 13 goals from 18 shots. That meant that the Bloods would lead 30-21 at the main break.

Maryborough had their best quarter in the third period, and had many decent looks at goal. However, they were unable to bridge the gap, with only 11 of their 20 shot attempts leading to a goal, while South Bendigo were a bit more efficient, scoring 13 goals to take a 43-32 lead into the final change.

The Bloods were able to hold off all of the Magpies’ advances in the final stanza, scoring 14 goals to 13 to eventually run out 57-45 winners.

It was a result that perhaps didn’t reflect the Magpies’ excellent second half effort, as they desperately tried to mark Tranter’s 100th game as a winner.

Best for the Magpies were Eliza Roughead, who restricted South Bendigo goal shooter Chloe Langley to 23 goals in what was a fantastic battle, while Tori Chandler was also recognised for her efforts through mid-court.

Keely Hare led the way in the goal circle, scoring 37 goals, while Jordan Macilwain added eight.

The result leaves the Magpies stuck in seventh, with their final game of the season against Kyneton next Saturday an effective dead rubber. However, they’ll make every effort to ensure they can leverage a victory to give themselves a great platform for the 2023 season.
