Maryborough have unfortunately rounded out their season with a winless campaign, following a 101-point loss to Kyneton on Saturday afternoon.

It was a tough afternoon for the Magpies, who were only able to score in the second and fourth quarters, while the Tigers, who were ultimately unsuccessful in their bid to grab the final spot in the top five, were out to win by as much as possible.

At quarter time, it appeared the Tigers’ dreams were alive, taking the game away from Maryborough almost immediately with a nine-goal to zero first term to take a 59-point lead at the opening break.

Maryborough looked to fight back in the second quarter, hitting the scoreboard, but could only register minor scores to open the term. An agonising example was Brady Neill’s long range effort, which looked a certainty to bounce through for a goal, yet stopped mere millimetres from the goal line and rushed through.

From the ensuing kick-in, however, Joel Cooley was able to intercept and put through the Magpies’ first goal of the afternoon.

It was the only goal of the half for the Magpies, who had seven shots on goal, but could only put through one major.

In the meantime, Kyneton were continuing to push, registering four goals for the term to ensure they would take a 73-point lead into the main break.

It was all the Tigers again in the third quarter, kicking six goals, while holding the Magpies to no score, to ensure they would lead by 117 points at the final change.

A difficult day ended on a positive note at least, with Maryborough kicking the only three goals of the final quarter to bring a little bit of respectability back onto the scoreboard.

Mitchell Byrne started the final quarter with a strong contested mark inside forward 50, and duly converted for the Magpies’ second goal of the day, which was then followed by Patrick Chard converting from a reasonably tight angle from a Thomas Gardam delivery. Kurt Santon put through the Magpies’ final goal of 2022 following solid coast-to-coast ball movement, with Santon accepting a handball over the top from Brady Neill to stroll in to the open goal.

While it was not the year the Magpies were hoping for, there is enough quality in their junior ranks to remain optimistic about future success.

Neill, Dylan Harberger, Gardam, Jayden Hooper, Coby Perry and Kya Lanfranchi were adjudged Maryborough’s best in their loss.

The Magpies’ senior season is over, but they’ll still be looking ahead to the under 18s meeting with Strathfieldsaye next Sunday morning at Queen Elizabeth Oval.
