It was a tough day for Maryborough Soccer Club’s senior men, eventually losing to Ballarat North United Black, but not without a good fight.
Maryborough were behind the eight-ball from the start, with Jacob Coxall scoring within 45 seconds for Ballarat North, but a good period for Maryborough was forthcoming afterwards.
They were able to gain some territory and asked some questions of the league leaders with a couple of shots on target, and some corners to put them under pressure, but they weren’t able to score, and soon went 2-0 down in the 16th minute when Daniel Acevedo scored off a deflection.
Three minutes later, Ballarat North had a three-goal advantage when Will Wright scored.
In the 34th minute, it was 4-0 after Coxall scored his second.
But Maryborough were able to keep pushing and had their reward in the 43rd minute when they pulled a goal back following a good move from Julian Callea.
Down 4-1, Maryborough were still determined to fight the game out, but a goal from Samuel Coxall in the 56th minute snuffed out any chance they had of making a fightback, with an unfortunate own goal from Mitchell Gardam making it 6-2 in the 72nd minute.
Maryborough were determined to finish with another goal and were rewarded, with Nathan Leist getting on the scoresheet in the 83rd minute with a slick finish into the bottom right corner, before Nicholas Johns restored the five-goal margin with only a few minutes to go.
Maryborough will now look to bounce back on Sunday when they travel to Victoria Park.
