Travelling with your dog
2 min read

It is estimated that 20 percent of travellers include their dog in their holiday plans. Many venues throughout the goldfields welcome well-mannered pups (and their owners). Before travelling to the region with your four-legged best friend, do a little research beforehand to ensure your trip is smooth sailing.

The RSPCA have put together a handy guide for travelling with pets. Some tips include:

  • Take your dog to the vet for a health check-up and update immunisations and treatments and book them in for a professional grooming session.
  • Pack a suitcase for your pet, including a leash, toys, food, medications, treats, water, and bedding.
  • Always carry extra bottles of water to keep your pet hydrated.
  • Bring treats with you to keep your pet satisfied and distracted.
  • Pack your pet’s favourite toy as it will help them to relax.
  • Never leave your pet unattended in the car.

Dog walking in the goldfields.

One of the joys of owning a dog is regular walks around the local area. In the central goldfields we are lucky to have many beautiful walking options for you and your pooch.

Following are just a few places to explore:

Lake Victoria

The walking track at popular Princes Park meanders around the scenic lake. It is an easy 1.3-kilometre circuit.

The Goldfields Reservoir

Wander through 1.7 kilometres of stunning wattle, box-ironbark and surrounding forest. This tranquil walk showcases birdlife and animals in their natural habitat. Dogs (on lead) are welcome to join their owners on the Saturday morning Goldfields Reservoir parkrun.

Maryborough off-leash dog park

The five-acre park is located between Jack Pascoe Reserve and Maryborough Netball Association courts in Carrick Street in Maryborough.

Maryborough Velodrome

Popular with locals, the town’s unofficial dog park can be found just outside of Maryborough on the Avoca Road. Be aware of snakes throughout the warmer months and please clean up after your pooch with the bags provided.

State Forests*

The State of Victoria Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning states: “Dogs are allowed in state forest but must be under direct control at all times and are expected to be on a leash in picnic and camping areas or when near other visitors.”

If walking your dog off-lead in the surrounding bush, please be aware of their impact on the native wildlife. Also be aware of dangers to your dog, such as hidden mineshafts and snakes. Take extra care on windy days; forests are closed on Code Red Fire Danger Rating days.

The central goldfields region can get extremely hot during summer. Please don’t walk your dog in the middle of the day and, if walking on roads and footpaths, check the temperature with the back of your hand. If it is too hot for you, it is too hot for your dog.
