It took Lavinia Male less than nine seconds to take home the 70 metre Women’s title.

Male, running off eight metres, took victory by just under one tenth of a second, running an 8.411 to win from Jemma Stapleton, while Bella Pasquali ran third.

Male said while it was a surprise, it showed that she was on the right track in terms of her preparations.

“I was shocked with my times and how I performed in my heat and my semi, I didn’t expect to come out and do that, so it goes to show my training is going to plan,” she said.

“We go through block starts at training to make sure our starts are absolutely perfect, everything so that our drive phase is perfect. There’s lots of times to win or lose there.”

Male’s shock was matched by her attitude to have fun throughout the day.

“I never imagined it happened. I got up and thought this would be fun, couldn’t wait to do it, but didn’t think I’d win a final,” she said.

It now leaves an open mind for Male to attack the rest of the season with her athletics prowess.

“Who knows what’s to come now, but I’ll keep dreaming,” she said.
