Maldon won just one quarter on Saturday afternoon at Bill Woodfull Reserve, but it was a quarter which did the damage as they scored a 14-point win over Dunolly in a crunch clash.
With both teams sitting sixth and seventh respectively, it was a big game for the prospects of both teams’ top four chances, and for much of the afternoon, it was an incredibly tight game.
Dunolly took a slight one-goal cushion going into the first break, kicking three goals to two as they made a bright start.
But it was all Maldon in the second term, taking control of the game and punishing Dunolly inaccuracy in the second term. The Dons kicked five goals, while the Eagles could only manage one goal from five scoring shots, sitting pretty at the main break up by 15 points.
The third quarter was essentially goal for goal, with the Dons successfully keeping the Eagles at arms’ length. Three goals apiece for the term saw both teams turning for home as it was at half time, with the margin 15 points.
Both teams could manage just one goal in the last term as Maldon successfully put the game away and ensured the Eagles weren’t able to put it together to fight back, with the Dons holding steady to win by 14 points.
Seb Greene was at his dominant best through the midfield, while Tanner Bishop, Darcy Kelly, Matthew Gray, Adam Robinson and Bailey Brown provided some key support. Gray, Brodie Leonard-Shannon and Billy Miller kicked two goals apiece.
Dunolly have now lost three games on the bounce, and will need to rebound against Talbot after the general bye as they look to regain their composure. Daniel Trull, Jay McDonald, Jake Willcocks, Jake Gavriliadis, Jack Merrin and Joshua Goodman were all named in the best, with Willcocks their sole multiple goalkicker with two majors.
