Maldon were the big beneficiaries of the weekend’s play, moving up to sixth thanks to a six-goal win over Dunolly in a high quality contest.

There were plenty of goals to go around for both teams throughout the afternoon, with both teams going blow for blow.

Maldon took a slight lead at the first change, scoring 11 goals to 10 to lead by the barest of margins. Katie Tong scored eight goals for the Dons, while Ainsley Taft added three, while for Dunolly, Brittany Hercus scored eight times, and Kate Ashman twice.

It was Dunolly who took the second quarter, and played impressively to lead by a goal at the main change, scoring 16 goals to 14 to lead 26-25. Hercus scored 12 goals and Ashman four for Dunolly, while for Maldon, Tong scored seven times, Taft five and Zoe Backway two.

Maldon were in need of a response and they were able to get it in the third term, scoring 15 goals to six to assume control of the game and lead 40-32 at the final change. Tong scored 11 goals for the Dons, while Backway scored four times, while for Dunolly, Hercus and Ashman scored three times each.

The final quarter saw the Eagles throw caution to the wind as they tried to whittle down the gap, and did succeed in winning the quarter, but it was ultimately their third quarter fadeout which was the difference, with Maldon holding on by six goals.

Taft scored six goals and Tong five for Maldon, leading the way with 31 goals for the afternoon. For Dunolly, Hercus scored 12 times to take her tally to 35 for the day, while Ashman added one.

Maldon have now won three of their last four, and face a significant test when they travel to Avoca in two weeks’ time, while Dunolly, who have now shifted to the bottom, will be hoping for a change of fortune in two weeks when they travel to Talbot.
