Maldon have firmed for a spot in the finals after holding Harcourt at arm’s length all day for a crucial victory at Harcourt Recreation Reserve.

It was a gritty, low-scoring affair for much of the day, with goals very much hard to come by, adding to the importance of Maldon’s victory, which sees them hold on to seventh ahead of their bye, which will add four more premiership points to their tally.

The first quarter was critical for Maldon. Not only did they open up a five-goal lead, they were also crucially able to hold the Lions to just two goals for the term. Katelyn Cutlack scored six goals and Emma Webb one for Maldon, while for Harcourt, Rhian Selwood scored both of their goals.

Harcourt finally kicked into gear in the second term, scoring 10 goals, but that tally was matched by Maldon, who maintained their five-goal lead from the first change to establish a 17-12 cushion. Cutlack scored six goals and Tayah Doyle four for Maldon, while Tegan McKay scored nine goals and Selwood one for the Lions.

The third quarter was essentially a replay of the previous quarter, with both teams scoring 10 goals again for the term — but where the Lions would make a challenge, the Dons would always have an answer. Cutlack scored six goals and Webb four for Maldon, while McKay would scored all 10 goals for Harcourt throughout the term.

The last quarter saw Maldon win their second quarter for the day by scoring 10 goals to seven, but crucially, they were able to keep their lead throughout the entire game as they remain a game clear of the chasing pack in seventh. Cutlack finished with another six-goal haul to finish with 24 for the day, while Webb scored four goals. For the Lions, Selwood scored four goals, with McKay scoring three to finish with 22 of the Lions’ 29 goals.

The Dons will now be hoping Newstead get the job done against Trentham next week to extend their gap to two games, while Harcourt’s task doesn’t get any tougher than a trip to the Avoca Public Park to take on the Bulldogs.
