Maldon took an important victory on Saturday as they defeated Talbot by 27 goals, alleviating some pressure on their spot in the top eight.
The win was of great relief to the Bombers, as they took their first victory since round six to move back up to seventh on the ladder, maintaining their one-game gap to ninth-placed Maryborough Rovers.
The Bombers knew they needed to get off to a quick start to ensure they wouldn’t be under pressure for the bulk of the afternoon and they were successful in this endeavour, scoring 20 goals to seven in the first quarter to take a 13-goal lead at the first change.
The Hawks enjoyed their most competitive quarter of the afternoon, but a further 16 goals to 12 in the second stanza saw the Bombers open up a 17-goal lead at the main break.
The third quarter followed a similar pattern, with the Hawks giving their all, but the Bombers were proving just to be a little more efficient with the ball as they scored a further 16 goals to Talbot’s 11 to lead by 22 goals at the final change.
Seventeen goals to 12 in the final quarter saw the Bombers eventually run out winners, giving the team a much-needed boost ahead of must-win games against Navarre and Royal Park to finish the season.
Morgan Walker stood out for Maldon, scoring 47 goals, while Katie Tong and Jaylea Ford were also good performers for the Bombers in their victory.
Jacqueline Wardlaw and Shae Ohlsen were two of Talbot’s better performers throughout the afternoon.
