A close game was expected at the Bill Woodful Oval when Maldon and Talbot met last Saturday and it was close early, but the Bombers took control after quarter time to win by 46 points in a day of celebration for the club.

Youngster Noah Thompson showed he will be a player of the future when he slotted two goals in the opening term including the first goal of the day inside five minutes.

Talbot started to settle down, and kicked the next three goals through Adam Scott, Trent Barras and Matt Bond and seemed to be taking the upper hand early in the game.

But the Bombers hit back with goals to Brodie Leonard-Shannon and Ash Woodman, then Thompson kicked his second when Rhys Ford tapped the ball into his pathway, and he goaled in the goal square for the Bombers to lead at quarter time by four points.

Maldon kicked the first three goals of the second quarter and their defensive pressure was keeping Talbot from their scoring zone.

In fact, their first forward entry was at the 23-minute mark resulting in a minor score to Trent Severino. A minute later the Hawks scored their first and only goal of the term when a long shot from Jude McGuire was shepherded through the big sticks to reduce the half time margin to 18 points.

The third term was a dour struggle, but Maldon still maintained the dominant position, and a four-goal final quarter was very pleasing for the Bombers’ 150th year reunion crowd as they witnessed their team jumping up into the top eight.

Best players for Maldon were Patrick Long, Josh Pascoe, Max Johns, Leonard-Shannon, Oliver Leonard-Shannon and Jordon Collins.

The Hawks were well served by McGuire, Liam Hunter, Barras, Kallan Boucher, Luke Kemp and Alex Marshall.
