As the national SES body starts making phone calls in the region asking for donations, the Maryborough SES unit is also accepting donations directly to the local service.
The National SES Volunteers Association undertakes fundraising drives semi-regularly, including with raffle ticket sales over the phone.
Funds raised through the National SES Volunteers Association go to the volunteer association of the respective state the donation came from and is then distributed to SES units.
Maryborough SES unit controller Darren Cooper said he’s heard from some residents that it’s been unclear in the past whether the calls for donations were specifically for the local unit — which they’re not — but encouraged anyone interested in making a donation locally to contact the Maryborough unit directly.
“These are legitimate entities that call on behalf of the SES, but any donations that are made may not directly assist the Maryborough SES unit,” he said.
“Due to the constant need for donations for the purpose of life saving equipment, especially during these difficult fiscal times, the Maryborough SES unit would prefer donations to be directly to the unit so they can be used to benefit the local community.
“If people are interested in donating, they can contact us at Maryborough@ses.vic.gov.au and we can provide details on how to donate from there.”
