Majorca’s Avenue of Honour re-planted

A plan to restore and re-establish Majorca’s Avenue of Honour was realised last weekend, with community members and the Carisbrook Fire Brigade coming together to complete the project.

There was originally an Avenue of Honor planted in Majorca well over 100 years ago but the trees have all since died.

“This is such a spartan spot and sad to see only the flagpole and cenotaph and no avenue of honor,” Carisbrook and Majorca’s Anzac Day organiser and local historian Alex Stoneman said.

Last weekend, a handful of Algerian oak trees were planted — with the oak an eternal symbol of remembrance.

The advantage of Algerian oaks are that they are hardy and can endure extreme weather conditions and although slow growing, don’t drop limbs and are shapely trees once established.

The avenue will add to Majorca’s cenotaph and create a more complete war memorial, commemorating local soldiers who have fallen over the years.

Restoration of the avenue follows a similar project in Talbot, where 40 Cimmaron Ash trees were planted along Ohara Street, alongside the Talbot Soldiers Memorial Park in November, 2022.

Over 60 residents attended an official opening of the Talbot Avenue of Honour once works were complete, thanks to a more than $14,000 grant — just over 100 years after the town’s original avenue was planted.
