The scoreboard may indicate a 51-goal victory to Kangaroo Flat, but it was the intent and learnings from the young Maryborough group which impressed against a Bendigo Football Netball League powerhouse.

While it was always going to be a big ask to keep up with the Kangaroos across all four quarters, there was a consistent theme all day in that the Magpies were still able to generate scoring opportunities through the hard work of their midcourt.

The Kangaroos scored 20 goals in the first quarter to have a foothold on the game, while Maryborough were able to score eight goals of their own, with Keely Hare scoring five goals and Abbey Nalder adding three.

Kangaroo Flat increased their lead in the second term, scoring 22 goals, while Maryborough continued to fight hard, scoring seven goals. This time, Nalder added five goals, while Hare added two.

Maryborough’s highest scoring quarter proved to be the third, although the same could have been said of Kangaroo Flat, who scored 25 goals to the Magpies’ 10 during the period. Both Hare and Nalder scored five goals apiece, making the most of their chances in front of goal as the midcourt continued to work hard.

Defensively, Maryborough were able to restrict Kangaroo Flat to their lowest scoring quarter of the afternoon in the last term, holding them to 18 goals, while scoring nine of their own. Hare finished off a productive afternoon with eight final-quarter goals to take her tally to 20, while Nalder scored one to finish with 14 goals.

In the end, the young Magpies lineup can take some solace out of being able to score consistently against, with their 34 goals the equal-second highest tally scored by a team outside the top five against the Kangaroos this season.

Elsewhere, Maryborough’s 17 and under team kept up the pressure on Golden Square in their battle for the double chance, reducing the gap to just half a game after recording a strong 11-goal win over the Kangaroos. B grade fought hard, ultimately losing by 32 goals, while it was a tougher outing for B reserve, losing by 78 goals.
