A strong final quarter has ensured Maryborough scored back-to-back victories for the first time in 2022, proving too strong for Strathfieldsaye by 23 goals in a performance that pleased coach Alicia Cassidy.

In what was an even opening quarter, the work of goal attack Jordan MacIlwain was instrumental to the Magpies early on, scoring eight goals from 10 attempts to help them keep pace with the Storm. Scores were tied at 11 apiece at the first change.

The second quarter saw the Magpies take control, with goal shooter Keely Hare starting to find her range. She would score seven goals in the second, while MacIlwain added a further six, ensuring that the Magpies would outscore the Storm 13-8 to take a five-goal lead into the main break.

The third quarter saw the Magpies skip away again, with Hare scoring eight out of their 11 goals to ensure they would outscore the Storm by four goals, with the Magpies turning for home leading 35-26.

Maryborough would run out the game superbly, outscoring the Storm 17-3 in the final quarter, with Hare having her most productive quarter with 11 goals, while MacIlwain added six, to ensure the Magpies would eventually run out 52-29 winners.

The result ensured that the Magpies reversed their earlier defeat to Strathfieldsaye in round six, while also keeping them in the frame to finish sixth position in their battle with Kyneton.

Captain Maggie Tranter led from the front in a standout performance, while Tori Chandler provided great drive from center. MacIlwain’s per-formance, which yielded 23 goals, also caught the eye of Cassidy in the win.

Overall, it was a great weekend for Maryborough’s netball division, with the 17 and under team securing a finals berth following a 13-goal victory over the Storm, while the B reserve team was also able to take victory on what was a successful day.
