Jordan Macilwain scored her first victory as Maryborough’s A grade coach when the Magpies won by 17 goals against Eaglehawk on Saturday.
A dominant second quarter helped set the Magpies on their way, before an equally dominant final quarter helped put the game to bed as they vaulted to sixth on the A grade ladder thanks to their win.
The first quarter saw Maryborough weather some Eaglehawk pressure, with some good defensive work by Finley Wagstaff and Alex Williams seeing the Hawks miss seven shots at goal from their 18 attempts.
In comparison, the Magpies made full use of their opportunities in the goal circle, with Keely Hare scoring 12 of their 13 goals for the quarter, which saw them sit two goals in front at the first break.
Maryborough’s midcourt started to get on top in the second quarter, with Tori Chandler and Tali Chadwick starting to deliver the ball well, and both Hare and Macilwain were benfitting from their delivery. Hare scored eight goals, while MacIlwain scored nine.
Additionally, they were stifling Eaglehawk’s transition, with the likes of Ash Lierich, playing a one-off game while Dunolly had their bye, as well as Wagstaff and Williams, stopping the Hawks’ movement. As a result, Eaglehawk could only muster nine goals for the quarter.
With a 10-goal lead at half time, Maryborough had to withstand an Eaglehawk charge as they looked to get back into the game. But in a carbon copy of the first quarter, the Hawks weren’t able to make full use of their opportunities, scoring 14 goals from 19 attempts, while Maryborough scored 12 from 12. Hare added nine more goals to take her tally to 29, while Macilwain scored a further three.
The last quarter saw Maryborough dominate, scoring 18 goals to Eaglehawk’s nine in what was a replica of the second quarter.
Hare added 10 goals to finish with 39 for the day, while MacIlwain’s eight saw her finish with 21, as they recorded a 60-43 win.
While it was a tough day for the B grade and B reserve, both recording losses, the 17 and under team provided another bright spot, moving to 2-0 and third on the ladder courtesy of a 48-36 victory, with Abbey Nalder scoring 38 goals.
