Magpies out to start winning run before finals

Maryborough’s quest to make the top three and secure the double chance in A reserve has hit a snag over the past two games, but they now have an opportunity to build a winning run, starting with this week against South Bendigo.

This will be the first of three games Maryborough will have against lower-ranked opponents, and with their spot in the finals confirmed, Maryborough will look to be relentless in their pursuit of the double-chance.

The Magpies will be hoping to bounce back after the one that arguably got away from them against Sandhurst two weeks ago, a result which saw them drop to fifth on the ladder following their bye last week.

After sitting five goals up at half time, the Dragons slowly got themselves back into the game, outscoring Maryborough 10-6 in the third quarter, before hitting the front late on in a 14-11 last quarter to eventually win by two goals.

However, while the loss wasn’t ideal, it did show Maryborough will have the mettle to compete on the Queen Elizabeth Oval courts when push comes to shove in a month’s time.

Top of the agenda on Saturday will be ensuring that this game won’t be as close as the round six game between themselves and the Bloods.

On that occasion, it was goal-for-goal for a large majority of the afternoon, before Maryborough found enough late to ensure that they would take a one-goal victory, 50-49.

B grade will look to find their first victory against the sixth-placed South Bendigo, with the Magpies running out of time to secure their first victory of the season, while it is a similar story for B reserve, who come up against a Bloods team desperate to keep their spot in the top five.

Maryborough’s 17 and under team will clinch the double chance once and for all on Saturday if they can defeat South Bendigo.

The Magpies are four games ahead of fourth-placed Strathfieldsaye with four games left, and will be hoping to repeat their 15-goal victory against the Bloods in round six to ensure they will make the second week of the finals at the very least.
