It’s been a tough couple of weeks to start the season for Maryborough, but they’ll be looking to get the win they’ve been searching for when they host Kangaroo Flat tomorrow.
With playing-coach Coby Perry still sidelined thanks to wrist surgery, it’s been a struggle for the Magpies across midfield. But it appears they will receive some reinforcements this week, with VFL-listed Jake Lohmann set to be available, as Sandringham have a bye.
His inclusion would come as much-needed relief given the Magpies have suffered badly from the loss of Perry, as well as the unavailability of Bailey Edwards.
In his sole appearance last season, Lohmann starred against South Bendigo, picking up 45 disposals, and will provide grunt to their midfield mix.
In their 169-point loss to Eaglehawk last week, the Magpies weren’t able to keep up with the Hawks’ slick ball use, but started to move the ball better after quarter time and generate a few more opportunities.
That’s not to say the Magpies didn’t have their triers. Alex Brown stood out for the Magpies, kicking their only goal in the first quarter, while also collecting 35 disposals.
Kya Lanfranchi and Brady Neill have been industrious in defence to start the season, and took 13 marks between them on Saturday as they tried to keep the Hawks at bay.
Meantime, in a defensive sense, Joel Swatton was busy, recording 10 tackles, while Lucas Hurse had six, and Mitch McClure and Chris Freeman five each.
The Magpies will be hoping that their finish to their last meeting will give them impetus to finally break their losing streak.
Coming from 28 points down at three-quarter-time in their round 10 meeting, the Magpies threw everything at Flat, kicking five final quarter goals, but fell just 16 points short.
On that occasion, Jake Postle kicked three goals, while Lanfranchi, Perry, Liam Latch, Thomas Gardam, Aidan Hare and Lachlan Hull were all named in the best.
The Magpies’ other games this week will see the reserves look to bounce back from an 188-point loss to the Hawks, while the under 18s will look to start the season 3-0, with an opportunity to move into the top three.
