A first top-five scalp for Maryborough is on the agenda this weekend as they host South Bendigo in their final home game of the season.

With the Bloods sitting in fourth, and still an outside shot of getting the double chance in the finals, there would be no greater satisfaction for the Magpies this week than to end those hopes of the Bloods pro-gressing further up the ladder, as well as giving themselves a potential shot of finishing in sixth, with a last round clash against Kyneton looming.

To do so, though, they’ll need to improve from their last encounter against South Bendigo at Queen Elizabeth Oval — a game they lost by 16 goals. Despite leading at quarter time, the Bloods used a 19-11 second quarter to shoot ahead by seven goals at half time, before easing their way to victory throughout the second half.

Seventeen and under players Tali Chadwick and Ella Bartlett were elevated to the senior team for that clash, with Chadwick one of the better players for the afternoon, with her passing being a feature. Keely Hare shot 37 goals, while her partnership with Jordan MacIlwain saw both players work well in the goal circle.

Last week, the Magpies went down to Sandhurst by 38 goals, but there were some positive signs for the team as they look to continue their good finish to the year, having won three of their past five games.

Hare, Chrissy James, MacIlwain and Eliza Roughead all impressed against the ladder-leading Dragons, while they were able to top 40 goals for the second time against the team this year — joining only the second-placed Kangaroo Flat as teams that have successfully managed to achieve that feat.

Tomorrow’s game will represent co-captain Maggie Tranter’s 100th appearance for the Magpies, and the team will look to celebrate the occasion with a victory.

Elsewhere around the club, Maryborough’s 17 and under team were unsuccessful against the Dragons last week, consigning the team to an elimination final berth against Golden Square in two weeks time. They can seal fourth place with victory against sixth-placed South Bendigo tomorrow.
